Hi Shona,

I am also crazy about mountains and valleys. I mostly stay at Marisa Boutique Resort %26amp; Spa in Chiang Dao. Very nice resort located in a beautiful valley, with lots of trees, flowers, birds, butterflies etc. check their website: www.marisaresort.com

They also have a special tour to Doi Ang Khang Mountain.

Enjoy your stay at the North of Thailand

I would agree that Mae Hong Son province is a wonderful place to get away and into some nice mountains and valleys. Probably the best bet for that in Thailand. That said, however, I would definitely give Pai a miss. Pai has nearly 150 guesthouses now and has become what some have called the ';Khao San Road of the north';. It has really become over the top with a ';party scene'; and noise can definitely be a problem in some of the low-budget guesthouse ghettos. But if a ';scene'; fits your bill, then you can find late night beer bars with live rock music, hamburger shops, and tattoo parlours, but be sure to bring along your tie-dye fisherman pants uniform.

That said, there are plenty of other places in Mae Hong Son province that are still quiet and ';natural';. Look into Soppong, Tham Lot, Mae Lanna, or even Mae Hong Son town which is still far less touristy than Pai and has a nice Burmese Shan feeling to it. Mae Hong Son town has unique culture and architecture that you will not find anywhere else in Thailand. The drive over the mountains from Chiang Mai (and past Pai) is very nice with mountaintop view, lush jungles, rivers, caves and small villages for stops.

The north is generally surrounded with mountains and flowing rivers, hot springs and waterfalls. Chiangrai is less touristy and things are more affordable. Home stay of your choice can be viewed at http://www.myspace.com/homestay. Happy travels.
