Weather in june/july

Are thinking about booking holiday to la flora, khao lak for 2 weeks end of june /july, any advice please?

Weather in june/july

June/July is in the Wet Season which doesn%26#39;t mean that it will be raining all the time, just more than in the Dry Season when it still rains. It will still be hot though. The ocean will be rougher and tours to the Similan or Surin Islands do not run. It will aloso be quieter with some restaurants/bars closing but less so than in previous years as Khao Lak tries to become more of a year round destination. New programmes like Khao Lak Active (see http://www.khaolakaktiv.net/english/index.html) provide activities during the Green Season, as it is called. Activities like batik making, thai dance and sing, bamboo crafts, Tai Chi, yoga are all available.

La Flora is a fine resort on a lovely stretch of Bang Niang Beach - great for walking in either direction and fabulous for sunsets. There are restaurants and bars within walking distance with plenty more a 10 minute taxi drive away in the main township of Bang La On. The better restaurants tend to stay open all year round.

If you hire a car for part of your stay there are plenty of places to visit or, if not, there will still be tours to such as Khao Sok National Park. I would think a raft or canoe trip would be more 2white water'; at this time and the various waterfalls in the area better to visit when the rivers are full.

Summer in Khao Lak, copied from Khaolak Active

Interview with Richard Doring.

Khaolak Heute: Mr. Doring, you spent the last 8 summers in Khao Lak. What is it that makes you love this time of the year so much?

D:I am constantly fascinated by the intensive green of the natural surroundings and the ever changing colours of the sea which vary between azure blue and steel grey. And the clouds – sometimes cotton like feathery features, sometimes heavy snow white figures, and at other times also frightening, nearly black sculptures.

Khaolak Heute: And what about the rain?

D: One summer we had guests, who experienced only 2 nights of rain. The sea was ideal for bathing, and I saw them swimming every day. They couldn’t understand that summer is not the main holiday season. But you are right, there are also days, where the sea roars, the wind screams in the palm trees and the rain doesn’t stop. But it is still nice and warm all the time.

Khaolak Heute: What can you do in Khao Lak when it is raining?

D: Many guests appreciate it when they can find the time they were looking for all year to read their books. Others like to watch the natural play of a tropical rain. You know, it is really special, when you are still standing in the dry and you see the rain sweeping in over the ocean. Suddenly a strong wind starts and after 2 minutes the downpour is here bucketing down with awesome power.

Remember also that it is still hot and you can get a tan even when it is cloudy. More importantly you can still get sunburn so a good high factor sunscreen is still necessary.

Khaolak Heute: Is it not boring, only reading books and watching the rain?

D: Certainly, there are guests who would like to be more active during their holidays. For them, the joint initiative, Khao Lak Active, has created something really special. Khao Lak Active offers, in the so called green season from July to October, leisure activities and courses, where the holiday makers not only will have fun but also will learn from them. They will take something useful and interesting home. Some of them will continue with this newly learned activity. For others it was only a taste of a new unknown field. What the guest will be able to tell back home, will fascinate and appeal to their friends much more, than boring stories from a simple beach holiday.

Khaolak Heute: You are making us curious, Mr. Doring. Let us know, what activities you are speaking about?

D: You can learn Thai cooking or Thai boxing. Tai Chi and yoga will be offered as well as an introduction to diving. For kids computers will be available where they can use the internet free of charge. Competitions in computer games will be organised. Painting and handicraft will be included. Those, who want to get more involved in Thai culture can from professional teachers receive an introduction into Thai music or Thai dance. And during fair weather, elephant riding, biking, boating and much more will be on the program.

Khaolak Heute: These are really fantastic activities. Can you still tell us how to join the courses and how much they will cost?

D:That’s the unique part of our summer programme. The 8 hotels, which participate, offer the activities 3 times a week as an included item. That means free of charge. The guests will be picked up at their hotel, driven to the place of their chosen activity and after 3 hours brought back.

Khaolak Heute: Mr. Doring, thank you very much for the interview.

Swiss Park Hotel

Hi

I am looking for a hotel in Bangkok (around 2000 baht) and must be near to nightlife and convenience (near BTS station).

I know Swiss Park Hotel in Sukhumvit fit the 2 criterias above but I would welcome any comment on this hotel.

Also if you think another hotel is better, pl let me know.

Thank you.

Swiss Park Hotel

Hi. I have ben to Bkk many times over the past few years, staying mostly at the Swiss Park.

In fact, I am staying there again from April 10th!

Being located on Soi 11/1 it is ideally placed for shopping and night-life, yet far enough removed from the main Sukhumvit Road to be fairly quiet at night.

The rooms are clean, the staff friendly, and the breakfast adequate ( but get there early!! ).

I have tried other hotels in Bkk, but in my opinion the Swiss Park ticks all the right boxes and for its price is very reasonable.

Believe me, there are MUCH worse !!! ( Do not even CONSIDER the Business Inn on Soi 11/1, near the Swiss Park !)

An alternative which I have used is the Ever Rich Inn. This is located actually ON Sukhumvit Road between Sois 5 and 7 ( You can easily miss it between the shops !). The rooms are spotless and modern, there is computer access, and the staff are very friendly. It is pricier than the Swiss Park at between 1400 and 1600 per night ( the 1600 gets a bigger bed and a window! ) and there is no free breakfast, but is excellent value.

I hope I have been of some help, and enjoy your stay.

Swiss Park Hotel

Hi Pete23247

Thanks for sharing your experience with me.

I have booked Swiss Park Hotel and will be staying there on 18 - 21 Apr 08.

i%26#39;ve heard alot of good reviews from those who have stayed at swiss park too..so should be alright :)

Hi Huatah!

I am glad you found my advice useful.

I actually check BACK IN to the Swiss Park on the 18th , after a few days in Hua Hin.

I will say %26#39; Hi %26#39; if I see you in reception! :-)

Once again, have a great time.

Tour with Tong to Floating Market and TIger Temple.

My friend and I took the tour to the Tiger Temple and Floating Market a few weeks ago now with Tong. Tong was exceptional. She made the tour so interesting. Here are some of the reasons why we would book Tong again in a heartbeat.

: 5 star treatment throughout the tour

: We always went to the front of the queue.

: Tong was so informative throughout the tour.

: Tong fed us so well food was coming out of our ears!

: Especially at the Tiger Temple she is so well known and respected by the staff.

: We were lucky enough to be able to go into the enclosure with her bear. Such a beautiful, unique and memorable experience.

: The price for booking Tong as a personal tour guide is very reasonable.

Thanks Tong for making this tour one of the highlights of our trip. You are the most beautiful tour guide in all of Thailand!! We took some wonderful photos and will post them as soon as we can organize it.

Tour with Tong to Floating Market and TIger Temple.

Hi Brettbam, Tong is just beautiful isn%26#39;t she, we all miss her and will definately go back to Bangkok one day just to see her. Looking forward to your photo%26#39;s.

Tour with Tong to Floating Market and TIger Temple.

We have read so much about Tong and now have got our hearts set on tours with her. Have emailed her on a number of occassions and got an initial reply and then nothing. We are anxious to book these tours. Can anyone suggest how we get Tong to reply?

Cheers

Lyn

Hi

We had this problem, she is very busy for obvious reasons, just keep trying she will get back to you eventually

regards susie

You just have to send an email with URGENT in the subject line if you havent heard back.. she will generally answer those that are closer in date... I stayed at her house a couple of weeks ago and saw the crazy emails with my own eyes... she had almost 2000 unanswered emails sitting there waiting! I dont know how she does it!

Be patient and she will get back to you, but if the date is close do the URGENT trick!

Reet xx

We went out with Tong last month and she told me she was fully booked up until March 2009!

She%26#39;s great at her job, but it%26#39;s amazing how powerful Tripadvisor can be.There%26#39;s nothing like word of mouth!

If Tong is booked until March 2009, does anyone have an alternate to recommend? I will be in Bankok in early November and would like to start booking now.

Thanks!

Hi;

Tong is absolutely busy lady with fully booked through 2009. I am visiting Bangkok in a couple month and this will be the third time since 2007.

The Tong tour , my Thai%26#39;s girl friend and I still want to go is the famous Tiger temple and the floating market , but, we problaly shall do them in the alternative ways without Tong.

Tong has other guides she uses for the days she is fully booked so even if she is not free herself she can give you a good quality guide.

Reet x

Hi Reet,

Welcome back !!! Looks like you had a crazy fun 6 weeks away. Hope the post SE Asia blues don%26#39;t you hit you too bad.

MY APOLOGIES for not getting in contact with you in CM. As you can imagine with 5 of us, it was quite a challenge trying to keep our schedules together. I also had a lot of other people wanting to be with us as I was the token Asian bargainer in the group. I also imagine CM as a place where I could just walk anywhere %26amp; it is a bustling city.

Glad you had a ball with Tong as always. WE%26#39;re planning on our 4th trip to BKK to see her.

Be well !!!

Thank you all for your posts about Tong. We are now in contact with her and have arranged two days of tours. We cant wait for this part of our trip as she sounds amazing to tour with.

I knew she was a busy woman by reading all the posts on this forum but didn%26#39;t realise just how busy.

Reet - that is incredible what you say about the amount of emails she has to answer. Think she needs to hire a secretary or personal assistant. lol

We are all very lucky to have someone like Tong for our Bangkok experiences.

Keep up all the good advice posters.

Cheers,

Lyn

I'm looking for a Tanning Bed due to Rainy Season...

Does anyone know a spa resort, hotel, or a salon that has a tanning bed available for Drop In%26#39;s. I will be staying near Soi Bhua Khao, in Central Pattaya.

And if so, ';where, how much, and for how long a session?';

Unfortunately the beach may be out of the question. Monsoon season... EEKS! Sunny days are like crap shoot in October.

I am desperately looking for a facility to use. I don%26#39;t want to register as a hotel guest. *If I can get away with paying a drop in fee somewhere, it would be great. *Pasty white skin looks too unhealthy! And I need the vitamin D.

I'm looking for a Tanning Bed due to Rainy Season...

HI the problem with looking at the meterological data available on the web it doesnt give the whole picture, most of the rain is earlier in October and tails of dramatically from the middle and towards the end of the month, also locally the climate here in Pattaya for whatever reasons tends to stay drier than most of the areas surrounding it and you should get plenty of sun, even during the rainy season we get some sun anyway and rainfall can come in short but heavy periods then a couple of hours later you wouldn%26#39;t think it had rained at all , as for Tanning beds they probably are available here but you are comming to a country where some of the the local population spend big money on whitening creams to look as pale as possible, darker skin is not really desirable so you certainly would only find a sunbed in a top end hotel or resort if at all, Tony%26#39;s has a spa fitness centre on 3rd rd that may have a daily or weekly membership available also try Fairtex on North rd they both might have some sunbeds.

I'm looking for a Tanning Bed due to Rainy Season...

Thank-you! By the way... I am familiar with Pattaya weather as well as Thai culture.

Can you tell me where North Road is?

Are you familiar with skin cancer????

Nice one!

';Can you tell me where North Road is?';

*

If you mean North Pattaya Road it is located between Sukhumvit Road and the Dolphin Circle in front of Kiss Restaurant.

There is plenty of sunlight to give you a free tan just lying around the pool - even during rainy season.

(You could get a tan started BEFORE you come to Thailand!)

Good luck.

For anyone unavailable to get a bass or needing to acclimatize ~ *Used in moderation, the beds serve well for many.

Here%26#39;s a facility with tanning beds~

Tony%26#39;s has tanning beds at their Japanese Spa and massage facility, which is located on third road behind Tony%26#39;s gym, roughly where Soi Diana would meet third road and close to ';X-yte'; night club.

The cost for a session is 200 Baht.

  • internal flights

Hi i%26#39;m organising a holiday to thailand 3 nights in bangkok then 7 nights in koh sumai.I was wondering if it was better to book the flights to koh sumai from bangkok when we get to bangkok or to book beforehand? if i book beforehand do i need to pay bangkok airlines in baht? or do they take 拢? Going at the end of may.

    internal flights

To be sure you get the flights you want it%26#39;s advisable to book in advance. If you book in advance on-line with your credit card (it%26#39;s a secure booking system) you will be charged in baht but that will be converted to 拢 at the rate of the day.

    internal flights

The flights between BKK and Samui are very popular, and i strongly suggest you book in advance.

If you can%26#39;t get on Bangkok Airways you could always try Thai Air.

    Abit more expensive though!

    International roaming

    Hi

We are off to Phuket next month and have a mobile phone for business use and cannot change the number.

Are there any other options beside international roaming?

    Thanks Mitch

    International roaming

Buy a cheap handphone with a local sim card. Under 2000 baht.

    International roaming

    Hi

Can we still keep our business number?

    Thanks

No, what you%26#39;d have to do is receive the message on your regular number, then call people back on your local phone/sim card to avoid paying for both when people call you and when you call them.

Mind you, if it%26#39;s a business phone, you can claim your expenses and it would be easier to just work off your regular phone for one month, unless of course, you receive dozens of calls per day. Remember that you%26#39;re most likely already paying $200 or so for the month on your phone plan whether you use it or not, so take that off the costs for starters.

    hi mitch

International roaming dosent cost much more . I do it every year we go i havent really noticed much difference in my bill than what it would be if i was at home. It is so much easily you dont have to worry just turn your phone on when you get there and it works straight away.

    Cheers Teresa=)

    Hi

Thanks for that, I think we will just get the international roaming, sounds like the easiest option, if it costs a few extra dollars it will be worth it. We are taking a laptop as well so the non-urgent stuff we can email.

    Thanks again

    Mitch

    hi mitch

we always take our 2 business phones with us and have never had a really high phone bill when we get home we always msg our kids a few times a day and my hubby has received calls and they werent that much but he does tell those that ring him he will call them back when he gets home

one thing we do do before we leave is turn off voice mail as this cost you as well if someone leaves a msg but if someone rings and you dont want to answer the call you can then reject it without it going to voice mail

    sharon

i have a prepeid phone, no lock or international roaming...........so is it correct that i can just buy a sim card in phuket , then get cheap calls???????????

I will be taking my mobile phone with me this time so I can keep in touch with home...How do you tell if your phone is unlocked. I would like to buy a happy sim card from Big C this time..I have heard this is the cheapest way to phone aust. My bills have always been hughe as I have used the phone in our room and gone through the operator.. Can anyone let me know how to check if my phone is unlocked before I leave aus. I own my phone. Thanks everyone.

    Hi Can%26#39;twait,

Just grab a mates sim card, stick it in your phone and then try to make a phone call. If it makes the call, then your phone is unlocked.

    cheers

    Niko

    Hi Niko,

Thanks for the mobile advise, I will give that a go!.

    Bangkok & Hua Hin

    Hi there,

I%26#39;m planning to go 3 days to Bangkok and then 7 days to Hua Hin but I%26#39;m wondering what%26#39;s the weather like in September.

If you%26#39;ve been there before and/or if you know well that part of Thailand, can you please let me know what you think.

I%26#39;m also thinking to book my own flight and accomodations, do you know if there is any direct flights to Bangkok from any UK airports.

    Many thanks,

    Bangkok %26amp; Hua Hin

hi i am travelling to thailand in 5 weeks time and we are travelling direct from heathrow to bangkok with eva airways. not sure how good they are but could let you know when i get back.

We are staying in hua hin.

    sarah

just reply if you want me to email you another time.

    Bangkok %26amp; Hua Hin

i could also let you know how we go on in hua hin too.

    sasrah

Hi,we have flown direct with Eva Airways twice and are flying with them this august to Hua Hin.They are really good,we only fly economy but you get good service and inflight entertainment in your seat.there are some seats in pairs, which we always try to get.would really recommend them.Happy holiday.

    Chris.

Hua Hin in September will have frequent rain, but you%26#39;ll have enough dry time to have fun!

I think there are flights from Manchester.

Hi we are going to Bangkok for three days and hua hin for 11 in september.

we have booked through Hayes and Jarvis via our friends in Lincoln. Think it was co-op travel. We are flighing direct from manchester with Quatar airlines. I have researched them and they are very good.

Hope you get what you are looking for

    Faye Cheshire

Thank you everyone for your help!

    Hi there,

We have been to Bangkok on several occasions and the last two have flown with qatar airways with a short stop in Doha. Have no complaints about them at all, they are cheaper and also fly from Gatwick which is convenient for us. We have travelled on from Bangkok to Hua Hin by road which takes about 3hours ish. We have booked this as part of the package with Thomas Cook.

There are many airlines that fly direct to Bangkok, it depends how much you want to pay. Thai is one and a lot of the Australia flights stop at Bangkok on the way.

The weather is ok in September, we usually go in August and it is warm but sometimes cloudy and a bit of the rain in the afternoon but it is lovely for sunbathing much more comfortable than blazing sun all the time as when the sun is out it is intense.

    Have fun

Bangkok - how much rain in July - please help

Can someone please help me? I maybe in Bangkok for 5 days.

How much will it rain each day from the 20th July onwards?

Somebody said it will only be for 1 hour each day. Is that a heavy downpour or a light shower?

I dont want each day spolit by the rain

Bangkok - how much rain in July - please help

I was in Bangkok in July frm 13 - 28 two years ago, but don%26#39;t remember the rain.

Infact it prob did rain but it didn%26#39;t affect our holiday and that why we don%26#39;t remember it.

    Chill and enjoy

Bangkok - how much rain in July - please help

I went in the middle of July last year. I spent about 5 days and there were only 2 heavy downpours that I can remember. It really didn%26#39;t ruin anything - everything dried up right afterwards as the sun came right out afterwards.

I am normally in Bangkok for some time over that period.

It does rain on some days but not every day and not necessarily at the same time. It can rain heavy for an hour or so but there are many places where you can go to keep dry at least on the outside.

Enjoy your trip and if it does rain remember you are in the tropics so that could be taken as part of the holiday experience.

Check out this for averages in any month in most areas of country.

Transit stop bankok regarding duty free

    Hi

I will be travelling on Thai airways from greece to sydney and have a trainsit stop in bankok. I wanted to buy duty free alcohol from in the terminal in greece and carry it on board but am concerned that when they check my bags again in bankok they will take my carry on luggage again. Does anyone know what happens regarding this issue

Transit stop bankok regarding duty free

I was informed by check in staff at Bangkok 3 weeks ago that I was not allowed any liquids in my carry on.

Friends also told me that this last weekend they had to leave tooth paste and mouthwash that they had in their carry on.

Best advice is to call Thai Air and ask them their current policy.

Transit stop bankok regarding duty free

They started a couple months ago about the liquids on board. However they made exception to the duty free products just bought/collected at the airport Idunno if Thailand%26#39;s airports only or not). So you MIGHT get this exception if you said your luggae was checked through and you keep the liquid in the duty free bags with receipt.

TO be sure +662 1321888 Suvannabhumi airport

    thank you :)

Only liquids exceding 100 ml volume per bottle bought inside BKK airport allowed on board for your SYD bound flight.

    Hi Cath,

I have the same question with a different start location. Did you try and bring duty free booze through transit? Did you have success?

I know that generally the rules are not to allow the liquids over 100ml, but are they enforced? Especially on Transit passengers?

    Cheers,

    Julian

Bangkok airport rules are that no liquids are allowed to be carried onto an aircraft unless they are in the see through bag supplied by the duty free shop.

The rule also applies to transit passengers.

On my last trip I was asked by the check in staff if I had ANY liquids in my carry on as they are not allowed in the cabin.

A previous poster even stated he had to leave his toothpaste behind.

We returned through BKK airport yesterday and were asked about liquids, gels etc. We showed them our clear plastic baggy with toothpaste, eye drops etc in and were told just to keep it available for inspection in our luggage. We bought some perfume which was sealed in a plastic bag and we were told to keep them in the sealed plastc bag.

    Thanks for your responses.

They do enforce the 100ml rule for items not in sealed bags (I had to quickly drink a 150ml redbull that I%26#39;d left in my backpack)

We bought some liquids (perfumes / cosmetics) in duty free in Bangkok on our way to Tokyo, and had no problem with this, presumably because they were in the sealed duty free bags.

My question is if the same treatment applies to duty free purchases from other airports. I%26#39;d prefer take the sake in cabin luggage where it%26#39;s less likely to get broken.

    Cheers,

    Mostlegendary

Thai Airways do allow liquid gels, etc. in the cabin, subject to the usual 100 mL container max inside the 1 litre plastic bag. They also allow liquids purchased in duty free so long as they are in the sealed duty-free bag.

    From the Thai Airways website:

regulations on liquids, aerosals, gels for thailand

all liquids, aerosals and gels and/or similar substances must be carried in the container with a capacity not greater than 100ml or equivalent in other volumetric measurement. liquids, aerosals and gels carried in the container larger than 100ml will not be accepted.

the containers must be placed in a transparent re-sealable plastic bag of a maximum capacity of 1 litre. the plastic bag must be completely closed.

only 1 plastic bag per passenger is permitted and the plastic bag must be presented for examination at the screening point.

the plastic bag must be presented apart from other cabin baggage, coats, jackets and laptops (computer notebooks) for separate screening. exemption is made for medicines and baby milk/food. however, appropriate and proportionate means of verifying the nature of such liquids are needed at the screening point.

exemption is also made for liquids, aerosals and gels purchased at the airport duty free shop or on-board aircraft. such items must be placed in the sealed plastic bag that is tamper-evident and displays the proof of purchase on the traveling date. such regulation is also applied with transfer passenger.

    Hi Cath120

Unless there is a very good reason not to, I would get your duty free on arrival in Australia

hi...v are a grp of 4, travelling to thailand in apr end. We are departing on te 25th of apr to bkk. Do not know much what to do, we%26#39;ll be there till the 2nd of may...confused between phuket and ko-samui! Not sure if nightlife at phuket is better or at ko samui? yeah n since there r 2 gurls we are very much interested in shopping! Pls adv!

Hi SaniyaIndia, I would go Patong Beach (Phuket) good shopping ,food, and great nightlife. Koh Samui would be quieter type holiday.

    Enjoy...Jill.

    thailand vacation

Go to Phuket for what you are looking for. More flight choices, better flight prices and more to do at Phuket compared to Samui. Be ready to hire a ride from the airport to the beach area as it is probably a 40 minute trip. Last year I paid $550 Baht. You can find a ride back by keeping an eye out for little signs at the various businesses as you explore Phuket. Find the price that is right for you, make the deal and get names and phone numbers. Tell them to be there at least 30 minutes before you really want to leave in case they no show and you will have time to arrange alternate transportation to make your flight on time.

    Have fun!

    Forum Members Fundraising Dinner

Is it shut down? I cannot find anywhere to add my reply. Not sure whether it%26#39;s just me shut out or someone took exception to the last post there.

    Forum Members Fundraising Dinner

    Hey hun

I%26#39;m afraid its not just you!!!

Its disappeared for some reason :(

    Forum Members Fundraising Dinner

Hi Tina, I wanted to reply to the last post as well but there is no reply button. Shame people could not leave things alone (or at least post seperate to this thread), now a thread that was started for such a good cause has been stopped.

    Cathy

Things seem to have changed around here quite a bit lately. %26#39;Wonder who is involved in this? Not making insinuations, or accusations, but something is definitely going on, in my opinion.

I did not see the post that was deleted, but wanted to reply to the Princess post. I really think that this thread should have been left alone and all the other topics that were cropping up be aired in a new thread.

At least then we would have had a constructive thread about the Fundraising dinner with positive input from members and not all the mud slinging, negative posts etc that seemed to come into it.

Have to agree Tina the forum has certainly changed over the last year, but there are still a lot of good people here who are willing to help etc.

    Cathy

Yes, it seems to have been shut down, but at least the information about the dinner is still there for us organizers to use.

I really wanted to the thread to stay positive, but at the same time I had to be as candid as I could as to why I could not say more about where we are at.

Anyway, if people have had problems that they legitimately want to bring to the attention of others, that is what the forum is about. A new thread, or a jbr, about their problems would be a better way to go.

Never mind, the dinner is looking good, and yes it will be for the benefit of the needy in Phuket. No rip offs at all.

Even though my singing has been banned.

Perhaps that is the reason the thread was closed?

    Seeya,

    Mark.

I thought this forum was ruled by the precept of; Get the truth, then go. How can you get the truth if it gets deleted or shut down all the time? Live by your motto, I say.

Hope it is up and running by June. Count us in.

    Cheers,

    Lyn and Ray

Princess Jazzy back with a venegence I assume.... LOL...

Spot on Mark, It definately had to be due to your singing or maybe that the last post had absolutely nothing to do with the dinner etc and who knows what the post before that said, so it seems these 2 posts caused the thread to be shut down.

I still dont understand WHY they had to close the thread though, but lots of strange things do happen here.

Perhaps the forum got jammed with everybody trying to reply to the royal pain in the a***e, but we have to move forward and remain positive so the Fund raising dinner can go ahead as there are so many of us who would like to give something back to

    TwinPalms concern-10 days to go

mmh...getting a little worried now as the last couple of reports for the hotel have not been great! We are going in 10 days time and the concern of construction is at the back of my mind. We have been told construction she be minimal when we get there and just finishing touches, this doesn%26#39;t seem the case. Has anyone been around this are recently? How is the noise? Tks

    TwinPalms concern-10 days to go

We were at Twinplams over XMAS...the construction on the hotel expansion was nearly completed and work on the Marriott next door was mostly interior work....there was very little noise...it did not bother us at all, even sitting by the pool. The hotel is wonderful..you will have a great time.

    TwinPalms concern-10 days to go

I have to say KJDSouthWales I have also been checking constantly on any updates regarding Twinpalms. Hubby and I are booked in on the 19th April for 8 nights and hate the thought that there is a construction site happening. Most reviews are good but I saw the last one (like yourself) and thought Oh oh! I will be watching closely for any replies.

We visited TwinPalm in February but admittedly in the evening for dinner.I am unable to report on the construction work during the day but I thought it worthwhile to let you have my reaction to the place: it is stunning.

Phew...lets hope it doesnt affect us much ey. Bit risky booking it but loved the look so just had to do it...will report back.

Baan Talay Chine Resort, Hua hin

    Has anyone stayed here recently?

Any problems with mosquitoes, building noise?

    Anything wlse we should know?

Any suggesstions for better quiet, boutique hotels?

    thanks

Baan Talay Chine Resort, Hua hin

We stayed here for 1 night in February. It was difficult for the tuk driver to find (near the Royal Palace) as I think it is new, but the lady owner made us very welcome. The bedrooms are very nice, quiet and recently fitted out, we had the 2 upstairs bedrooms - there is no dining room so breakfast was brought upstairs on the balcony. Several of the rooms have private plunge pools, but as we were looking for somewhere for a week with a communal swimming pool and lots of outside place - this did not seem to fit the bill. The owner took us on her motor bikes down the road to a fish restaurant for dinner - the best in town - and it was. We checked out the next morning - she wasn%26#39;t offended and directed us to the centre of town, storing our luggage until we were ready to collect. We soon sourced Baan Laksasubha, adjacent to the Sofitel - brand new and 4 * quality. I would recommend Baan Talay Chine - but not for a lengthy stay. I think they are possibly trying to attract Bangkok people wanting a quiet weekend retreat - and that would be perfect.

    thailand weather help

i keep looking on weather pages and it keeps saying scattered storms will the weather be good in april in phuket , phi phi and bangkok please help.

    thailand weather help

Sawadeekrup, greetings from Chiangrai, Northern Thailand. Mid April is Songkran where people are splashing each other with water. It is the hottest month of the year in most part of Thailand. The south offers you the beaches but the north has mountains, waterfalls, hill tribes, elephants and food. The weather in the north is sunny. To be sure of the weather nearer to you arrival, you may message me for the weather update. Hope this will help.

    thailand weather help

Right now there are storms in Bangkok. But don%26#39;t last long, it is very hot going up to 40C+ soon.

    Evening recommendations?

Any recommendations for evening activities in Bangkok. I am going to be in town for business for a couple of days and it would be nice to see a little bit of Bangkok after work, and obviously have dinner as part of it.

    Evening recommendations?

Central World intersection and/or riverside experience

    Evening recommendations?

Evening dinner cruises are available. Find the nearest travel agent, they act as tour brokers, select an evening event and they will make the arrangements for you.

I suppose you have already know that just strolling down Sukhumvit Road (near Nana Skytrain stop) or the Patpong area is an experience all n it%26#39;s own!

I like sitting at a little sidewalk cafe (cheap seats, plastic table) nursing a beer and watching the whole CIRCUS walk, stumble or crawl by, especially late around midnight!

    Good luck.

  • thailand on a budget

i%26#39;m thinking about going to thailand for a few months (maybe more) so am looking to keep costs down. what could i realistically spend per day/week (including accommodation) if i didn%26#39;t want to spend too much, and are some areas cheaper than others? accommodation-wise as long as i%26#39;ve got a bed and a private bathroom i%26#39;m pretty flexible.

    thanks in advance

    thailand on a budget

The best website for you to start planning your trip would be www.travelfish.org

You could probably spend as little as 10-15 pounds per day... maybe even less.. just depends on how good you are!

    thailand on a budget

Stay near Khaosan Rd. There are cheap and good accommodations..you can take any tour up there or you can go to see the GP, Wat Arun or Wat Pho on your own as they are in the same area.

    thanks for your answers.

you mentioned 10-15 pounds a day, surely that doesn%26#39;t include accommodation??

Yep that includes accommodation.. just depends on your budget, and the standard of accommodation you can put up with .... We found some fantastic rooms for 400-1000 baht in our travels, and survived on about 1500 baht per person per day living comfortably!

    thanks emjayreet

it looks like i may be able to stay longer than i expected.

It is surprisingly cheap, and as long as you do your research then you should be able to have a good time on a minimal budget.

If you are interested you are welcome to browse through my blogs for ideas at www.travelblog.org/bloggers/reet and feel free to contact me re any of the accommodation etc

One can enjoy Thailand for 20-25 US dollars per day (room, food and a couple tuk-tuk rides per day) easily if you aren%26#39;t looking for luxury. Of course, night life would be additional if that is on your agenda.

I concur that Khoasan Road is the center for cheap living, although other areas are just as thrifty.

If you want to get out of Bangkok learn about the train system....it can be very thrifty travel...especially if you have time.

Have fun and do your research NOW. You can do it.

Sawadeekrup, greetings from Chiangrai, north Thailand. Are you more inclined to nature or wish to learn/understand more of the local lifestyle, culture, customs and home cooked food? At the same time, it would not cost you an arm or a leg to visit places of interests. Plan for a few days of stay with the locals, be part of the family. Then Chiangrai is the place. Message me, if you need more advice.

    Karon vs Kata/Noi

I am 28years of age and going to phuket for the first time w/ girlfriend. Not sure karon, kata or kata noi. Looking for nice hotel/beach but not too far away from some nightlife/bars (love to people watch). Any suggestions would be great.

    Thanks

    Karon vs Kata/Noi

I have just come back from staying at the Katathani which is on Kata noi. My advice would be to stay either in Kata or Karon as they have more of a nightlife and bars. Kata noi is really quite as the Katathani is the only hotel there and you will need to take a taxi to access anywhere else. The Kata beach looks like a lovely hotel...we had a wonder inside it.

    Karon vs Kata/Noi

    Hi Johnny102,

We stay at Kata Beach resort every time we are in Phuket.Rooms are great, right on the beach, great long beach to walk along, theme nights in the resort are good value for money, plent of good eating places around on the streets, easy to get tuk tuk or taxi to patong beach,or even bus if you want slow ride.

    Cheers Goldie

Thanks for the help. Has anyone been to surin as opposed to karon/kata??? Ist there a bar/restaurant scene just to grab a few drinks before heading to patong for a night out.

    again thanks for the help

We stayed in Karon, this is bang in between Patong (the busy part, where all the action happens) and Kata (which is quieter). Both are a 15 mins tuk-tuk ride away, either way.

    Lodging by the mountainside/paddy fields

i am crazy about mountains and valleys. Any decent home-stay/lodging i can find in Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai in End Nov - Dec period.

There are many resorts on Mae-Rim Road. It surround with mountain and valley such as Proud Phu Fah

or Bua Saree Resort not too far from town.

    http://www.nagahill.com/ in Chiang Rai

    Hi Shona,

I am also crazy about mountains and valleys. I mostly stay at Marisa Boutique Resort %26amp; Spa in Chiang Dao. Very nice resort located in a beautiful valley, with lots of trees, flowers, birds, butterflies etc. check their website: www.marisaresort.com

They also have a special tour to Doi Ang Khang Mountain.

Enjoy your stay at the North of Thailand

I would agree that Mae Hong Son province is a wonderful place to get away and into some nice mountains and valleys. Probably the best bet for that in Thailand. That said, however, I would definitely give Pai a miss. Pai has nearly 150 guesthouses now and has become what some have called the ';Khao San Road of the north';. It has really become over the top with a ';party scene'; and noise can definitely be a problem in some of the low-budget guesthouse ghettos. But if a ';scene'; fits your bill, then you can find late night beer bars with live rock music, hamburger shops, and tattoo parlours, but be sure to bring along your tie-dye fisherman pants uniform.

That said, there are plenty of other places in Mae Hong Son province that are still quiet and ';natural';. Look into Soppong, Tham Lot, Mae Lanna, or even Mae Hong Son town which is still far less touristy than Pai and has a nice Burmese Shan feeling to it. Mae Hong Son town has unique culture and architecture that you will not find anywhere else in Thailand. The drive over the mountains from Chiang Mai (and past Pai) is very nice with mountaintop view, lush jungles, rivers, caves and small villages for stops.

The north is generally surrounded with mountains and flowing rivers, hot springs and waterfalls. Chiangrai is less touristy and things are more affordable. Home stay of your choice can be viewed at http://www.myspace.com/homestay. Happy travels.

    Hello All,

I am thinking of traveling to Koh Tao and some other areas alone this may and june. I will have a friend in Koh Tao, but he is a dive instructor and busy. I am 50 years old and wondering if I will meet people to hang out with, or is it mostly young partying divers? What about other islands in area and traveling alone to the rest of the country? What are your thoughts on this. I like to hike, paint, take yoga classes. thanks DD

    traveling alone

Hi, there will be lots on Koh Tao to keep you occupied, there are a couple of resorts on the south that offer yoga etc, there is also an amazing spa that over looks shark point called Jimakiree, you could easily spend a day there being pampered and relaxing for about $50. There are a lot of young folks at the dive centres but equally there are older folks too!Rent a quad bike or a scotter and have an explore.

There would be a whole wealth of scenes to paint, and there is an elephant trek, (not very long) but amazing.

Shark point, if you swim out at about 1-2pm you will see a few shark families (non biters of course). If you need any other info please message me as I don%26#39;t come on the forum very often

    Thanks

    traveling alone

It would be a good traveling experience to see the contrast of the beaches in the south and the mountains/valleys, waterfalls and lush jungles in the north. More so, you like to hike and paint. At the same time you can intimately learn the local customs and taste the home cooked food by living with them as part of the family. PM me if you need more advice. Pls to assist.

Lebua at State Tower - very urgent - reply asap tdday

    Hi All

I am looking at staying at the Lebua at State Tower for my honeymoon in late July. I have great deal at 37 UK pounds per night. I cannot get such a high qulaity Bangkok hotel at that price

Before I book it today a few questions..

    1. Is this location any good? Some of my friends said stay near the river..

    2. What is the surrounding area like? Are they any restaurants, supermarkets and places to eat

I want to see the sights and be near the shopping areas...

    Thanks in advance

    Dawpal

Lebua at State Tower - very urgent - reply asap tdday

Hi, if you really have obtained a rate of 拢37.00p per night then you have bagged yourself a wonderful deal so don%26#39;t delay BOOK-IT !!! Lebua is located at the top end of Silom Rd and would only be a 5min(depending on traffic conditions) cab ride or 20min slow walk to Patpong/Lumpini park. In my opinion Lebua is not worthy of a 5* rating - i would only give it a 4* but at 拢37.00p per night it really is an awesome deal.

Lebua at State Tower - very urgent - reply asap tdday

where did you get such a great deal.

yes can you tell us too, i am looking at this for my honeymoon too in July!

is it through a travel agent or a website?

It%26#39;s a good deal even at 60 quid, so... where%26#39;s the web site offering that price?

    Dear All

The website is expedia.co.uk. Special offer offer of stay 4 nights and get 30% off.

    A really good offer. Enjoy!!

    Thanks

    D

Just checked expedia and yes it is indeed showing 30% off BUT 拢70.00p per night is the total price that will be paid even after the 30% discount! NOT SUCH A GREAT DEAL METHINKS!!!

There are two offers at mo:

    1. ON OFFICIAL HOTEL SITE - The more days you book the more discount is applied.

    2. ON EXPEDIA

They are offering 30% of room rate. If you book 5 nights (double room - superior with breakfast) in July it is 拢74.72 per room per night.

Hence, coming to 拢37 per person per night.

    Expedia is working out cheaper.

    Hope this is okay.

In your original post you stated 拢37.00p per night - silly old fool me just assumed that you meant 拢37.00p per room(or suite . . coz lebua is an all suite hotel) and not 拢37.00p EACH for two people sharing, thus making it 拢74.00p per night per suite. Still not a bad deal for Lebua but 拢74.00p could also get you the solitaire/platinum suite at the President solitaire Hotel or the Davis suite at the Davis Hotel - both of which in my opinion give you more for your money.

Crown Tailors just inside of Sukhumvit soi 8 should be able to help you out definitely, and I%26#39;m sure they%26#39;re cheaper then Germany! Anywhere in Bangkok should be cheaper then Germany!

In actual fact, most places in Thailand do NOT sell cashmere but in fact are fakes! Please be warned about this before buying a tailor made suit.

  • Bangkok Hotel Choice?

I posted earlier and got great feedback, but I had limited my Bangkok hotel options in my previous postiing to the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit and the Conrad. I got mixed feedback. Is the Conrad really that far from the Skytrain?

I%26#39;m looking for something relaxing, stylish, great service, $300 or less per night (pref. less), with good access to Sky Train. Oriental and Peninsula are a little too expensive. I%26#39;m Starwood Gold and Hilton Honors Gold, thats why I focused on Sheraton and Conrad, but I%26#39;m open to any suggestions. Sofitel Silom, new Le Meridien in Silom, LeBua State Tower, Intercontinental, Royal Meridien Plaza Athenee?

Any Advice is appreciated. Thank you again to everyone who responded to my previous post.

    RockyMountain

    Bangkok Hotel Choice?

Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit and Intercontinental are next to the skytrain.

    Bangkok Hotel Choice?

What about the Pathumwan Princess? I%26#39;ve heard that it%26#39;s quite nice and it%26#39;s on top of the MBK shopping centre which is attached to the National Stadium Skytrain station. I think their rates is around THB4,100 or so. Would love to stay there but it%26#39;s over our (or should I say, my husband%26#39;s) tight budget.

Their website is www.pprincess.com if you want to have a look.

I%26#39;ve stayed at the Asia Hotel which is also attached to a Skytrain station last year but it%26#39;s not so fancy but the service was pretty good.

We%26#39;re going to Bangkok again in June and this time we%26#39;re staying at the Adelphi Suites which is also close to a Skytrain station (Nana). It%26#39;s got good reviews and we%26#39;re forward to staying there.

    Hope this helps :o)

    Hi,

Am actually staying at the Adelphi Suites at the moment. Spotless hotel, steps from Nana Station, great internet service, good breakfast. Very new hotel, rooms are spacious, 2 tv%26#39;s per room, good views, washer/dryer, small pool on 16th floor and brand new gym with view of city. Staff are kind and helpful.

The only potential negatives.... make sure they show you how the elevators work. Your key will only take you to your floor. We had 2 rooms on different floors, what a nightmare. If you have spectial requests i.e. non smoking, rooms near each other etc, they may not meet these requests.

Otherwise, would recommend this hotel. Good luck.

after a long day out the conrad is a bit of a walk from the skytrain.

the grandhyatt and four seasons are fabulously located and you can sign up for hyatt points.

the landmark also is next to the Skytrain and may not be 5 star ,however extremely pleasant

    Another backing for Landmark :-)

Bangkk airport - passport control - a nightmare!

We have recently travelled in and out of Bangkok airport four times. Each time the queues at passport control were awful. There are not enough kiosks ( or at least not enough were open ) and it seemed to take ages to ';process'; each person.

We allowed 2.5 hours between arriving in BKK and flying out again. We only just had time to make our next flight.

If, like us, you are arriving in BKK and have another flight, allow plenty of time.

On a good point, the new airport is much much nicer than the old one!

Bangkk airport - passport control - a nightmare!

    Hi;

I agree the airport needs additional custom officers.

However, it is more of a luck of time when you arrive at the same time with 4 other B474 from aboards and also, who are in front of you . That wasn%26#39;t the case for me . In my last 2trips check in and out both times , it only took 30minutes at the line to clear the counter . I think with the USA passport it may have add to speed up the process in here. Nobody asked me anything . I shall be back Bangkok and this new airport this spring 2008.

BTW, I like the new airport design archtitural with open high ceiling contemporary . The LAX is just an old fashion airport buildings with real boring look.

Bangkk airport - passport control - a nightmare!

We have had a slow time with passport control and collecting baggage but no worse that in Sydney. Ariving late at night we have found customs was easy - they has all gone home!

    cheers

    Freddy

About a month or so ago the government said there was a shortage of customs officers and they were looking for more, so the Thai authorities are aware of the problem. You%26#39;ll just have to allow plenty of time to be processed. Three hours is the generally-recognized time.

Yes it is slow and tedious! Leaving BKK, early morning last August, I never saw anything like the queues! Some of the desks were really slow.

I agree about allowing plenty of time; I had to queue for well over an hour.

It would be very easy to get caught out!

    Joe

Apart from a shortage of immigration officers as noted above, the authorities here in recent times have tightened up on immigration controls due to abuse of the visa rules.

At certain hours of the day it can be very slow due to the high numbers of landings and departures.

This is one of the reasons that airlines ask for passengers on international flights to check in 3 hours before the flight and 2 hours for domestic.

They certainly do need more staff

it%26#39;s not necessarily the lack of immigration officers that cause the problem. immigration still have to enter passport details on their computers by hand and also many many people fail to fill out there immigration cards properly.

in many other countries your passport gets swiped and your details are logged on the computer immediately. thai immigration are in the process of tendering for such a system. factor in also you have to get your phot taken then it%26#39;s no wonder each person takes nearly 4/5 minutes.

with the new swipe system and hopefully more people filling in their cards properly, processing should take about 2 minutes. here%26#39;s hoping.

    bkk3

Give me Don Muang back anyday!

I used Bangkok immigration three times in the last four months. 7 AM and it was no problem at all. The other times were midday and early afternoon and both times there must have been a thousand people waiting there for a long, long time. Even though all my details were correct and my passport was swiped, it still took the officer several minutes to process me.

I%26#39;ve been going to Bangkok for 22 years and immigration has never been easy.

    Hi;

Just a small note comparasion BKK new airport to the LAX here. You are better off going through the Thai%26#39;s

custom counter than our LAX. The queu line is unbearable and your waiting time for Non Citizen just 200 meters long. Even with USA citizen lines

are just taking over 30minutes for me to clear .

And that is over 10 open counters at anytime of the day . So, I don%26#39;t have much to complain the Thai%26#39;s

    immigrations here.

The Demon and The Blue Angel

Whilst in Khao Lak if you visit the Tsunami Memorial at Baan Nam Kem, about half an hour drive north of Khao Lak (see photos at khaolaklovers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=224 ) or go across to nearby Koh Kho Khao (see photos at http://photos.orange.co.uk/album/5357439 )

try to pay a visit to another poignant reminder of the Tsunami. These are the fishing boats Krisana Sakorn, The Blue Angel, and Sri Samut, The Demon. The site is tucked away just off the main road on your left as you approach the pier for the ferry to KKK. This is where they both finished up after being taken here by the wave on very different journeys with very different but, in the end, heartening conclusions.

Have a look at khaolaklovers.com/forum/viewtopic.php… for some photos together with the tale of each vessel%26#39;s amazing journey.

The Demon and The Blue Angel

    Hello Alan,

Had a look at all the pic%26#39;s and will most surely be going to see the Memorial site and the Blue Angel and the Demon. So sad, but lovely how the Thai people have moved on both spiritually and physically. My heart cries out to them.

Your pic # 15 and 17 - that chair look as if you have reserved it for me !! and pic # 28 + 29 of the hand carved table and chairs - absolutely beautiful.

    # 26 - is that a church?

I told Steve that I am going to be like an American or Japanese tourist when it comes to taking photy%26#39;s. I am a real ';happy-snappy'; and will let you see all my pic%26#39;s on my return.

Thank you again for sharing your holiday with us and I look forward to getting an email telling me more.

We have 6 weeks to go and I am now getting very anxious for the time to fly by.

Bye for now Mr + Mrs Arandora xx

The Demon and The Blue Angel

    Hi Jill,

    Thanks for your support.

That%26#39;s our chair. Please keep it warm for when we return. However, you may get too warm in the ';church'; as it is actually a local crematorium!!! Oops!

june 16th, 2 weeks, beach view villa, la flora

We are just about to book this holiday, what is the chance of it raining for the whole 2 weeks, this is our first time going thailand and need advice, or can anyone suggest somewhere as beutiful as khoa lak but with out the rain and lots of sun. any idea%26#39;s would be great. thank you

june 16th, 2 weeks, beach view villa, la flora

That%26#39;s a hard one! June is in the Wet Season or Green Season as it is now being called. Weather patterns are changing everywhere these days and whilst the likelihood of rain is high and perhaps every day but it would be very unusual for it to rain ';the whole two weeks'; but .....

The beach view villas at La Flora are lovely as is the beach they face and even if it is overcast you will love walking it and examining the sea shells washed up and the other flotsam and jetsom. The restaurant at La Flora is excellent and there are other restaurants and bars within walking distance. Never having been in June I can only say that when I asked a local friend in Khao Lak which month was best in the Green Season, his view was June.

It will still be hot and even if overcast you will get a tan but take care as you may still get sunburned.

There are activities in the programme at Khao Lak Active (see http://www.khaolakaktiv.net/english/index.html) to occupy you and give an insight in and experience of Thai culture should the weather be too bad.

    counterfeit perfume

    hi,

I was wanting to purchase a few bottles of perfume on my travels around thailand in june. Is perfume cheaper in thailand or will it be cheaper for me to buy it in the airport (Bangkok or manchester airport?)

Can anyone suggest anything never been to that side of the world before so completely clueless????

    Thanks

    counterfeit perfume

I found the prices of perfumes and Western Luxury items in general to be much more expensive in Thailand. I believe they levy a luxury tax on all such imports.

Best to buy from UK or if you are transiting in Dubai - thats really good priced and they have the latest editions.

    counterfeit perfume

But you can buy the fake stuff very cheaply if you want that. I bought a few for my daughter, from memory about 400baht a bottle upstairs in MBK. I also saw some on the side of the road for even less but there was no cellophane around the bottles. The ones I got for her seem fine, she%26#39;s happy with them anyway.

    Have a great trip

    Mandy

Mandy with no disrespect, fake perfumes are just that ... fake.

The aroma evaporates in no time, the fragrance may not match the that of the original scent, and sometimes fake cosmetics are downright dangerous - they contain lead and other toxic substances - buyer beware !

thanks 4 ur comments yeah i agree u just cant beat the real stuff.. il try buying in dubai airport change over there if it will be 2 deer in bangkok/phuket and koh samui. cheers

    cell phone help.......

i want to buy a phone in thailand from MBK visiting from new zealand. what are the prices of the phones(fliptop ones), what specific type of phone do i hve to buy for it ti wirk here and what are some other tips when buying. thanks

    cell phone help.......

That is not an easy question to answer. There are lots of fliptop phones of different brands and specifications, hence a wide range of price.

    cell phone help.......

when i go over will my english phone work in thailand?

To use a phone from another country in Thailand, it needs to be GSM 900/1800 and be ';unlocked';. Unlocked means that the phone isn%26#39;t tied to your carrier%26#39;s network in your home country. Many places can unlock a locked phone for a fee. Once you have a GSM unlocked phone, just buy a 1-2-call SIM card in Thailand, place it into your phone and your good to go. Good thing about 1-2-call is their coverage area is good and when your minutes get low, just stop into any 7-11 and buy a refill card for 3 or 4 bucks and keep talking.

    Regards,

    Martian

    Nanu-Nanu

Agree with the above post, but once again, other sims are also quite cheap and easy to obtain. Also, to call abroad from Thailand, better to use a local phone and dial 009..usual rates to most countries are about 6 baht a minute.

Thailand uses a similar technology to that used in Europe and Mid East (and New Zealand) and cell phones work perfectly in Thailand.

You can buy a local SIM from any 7-11 shop if you want a local number.

Cell Phonesets are not a great bargain in Thailand but not overly expensive either - better to buy from large reputable store or Duty Free.

Flip tops are made by Nokia, Motorola, Sony Erikson to name a few - any preferences ? They will all work in your country.

You can count on paying about 4000 baht for a flip phone with some of the whistles and bells. For a plain-vanilla no-frills Nokia you can pay 1200 baht at Jay-Mart (in many Skytrain stations and malls).

I have a sweet little Samsung I bought factory-sealed from a vendor in MBK, which works great after one year. The only disadvantage: it seems to be an Asia-only model which my service provider doesn%26#39;t have on its database. So it%26#39;s impossible to upload ringtones (no problem - make your own and send them into your phone with Bluetooth).

Models for the Asian market are priced to sell, so they tend to be good deals. No need to spend extra money buying from a big store or duty-free.

  • Siam @ Siam Design Hotel - Good Location?

I was thinking about staying at the Siam @ Siam Design Hotel in Bangkok for 4 nights. I%26#39;ve read the reviews and looked at pictures and it looks nice, I was wondering though if the location is good in terms of shopping, eating and tourist attractions? Are the shops in the Siam area worthwhile? Also my partner tends to only like ';western'; type foods for some reason, is there enough dining options in this area without having to eat McDonalds etc?

Any insight would be appreciated! Thanks

Siam @ Siam Design Hotel - Good Location?

Its OK but maybe a fraction further away from the skytrain and shops than you might want.

For eating, MBK, Siam Center, Siam Paragon, Central World have all types for eastern and western food. There are also alot of restaurants of all types in Siam Square, which sits on the other side of the Siam skytrain station from Siam Center/Paragon.

BMK is down market; Tokyu department store in the same building is low-to-mid market; Siam Paragon is definately top end. The skytrain can take you to Central%26#39;s Chidlom branch (a big dept store group) where you can often pick up good quality products at reasonable prices. You can also visit the weekend market (Morchit Stn) at Chauchak by skytrain. Also Central World (use the skywalk from Siam) is Asia%26#39;s largest shopping mall.

Siam @ Siam Design Hotel - Good Location?

iv booked 2 stay here in june so if im going b4 u wil let u know what its like? any1 know is it difficult 2 access koh san road or patpong markets from this hotel??

    Thanks for the answers.

AmerieManchester - I%26#39;ll be in Bangkok in August, so any details from your June trip would be fantastic. Thaks

will do i shall let u know get back from our trip 26th june.

I stayed at the Siam @ Siam Design hotel a couple of weeks ago and loved it. The actual hotel is beautiful, fantastic pool, great decor and service is A1.

It was an easy walk (5-10mins) to MBK %26amp; Siam Center shopping area. there are heaps of food options around in those shopping malls. The shops range is great - we loved the range of brands in Siam Center and MBK is more like a massive market in a mall.

To get to other areas of the city you can just jump in a taxi or go on the skytrain.

I thoroughly recommend Siam @ Siam!

looking for upscale villa resort 2 adults / 1 teen (13)

We are looking for a small, upscale (under 100 rooms) in or around Phuket with private pool villas, for our next trip in August. What would you recommend knowing our daughter is 13 but used to luxurious hotels ?

NB : we were considering the Racha or the Ayara Hilltops

    Thanks for your advices.

How much do you want to pay? Try Trisara Resort, very up market and see reviews on this site and also at:

Unfortunately I can only dream of staying in heaven at Trisara but if I won lotto that is where I would be heading.

Trisara is over our budget unfortunately, otherwise I would stay there each time we travel to Thailand

    :-)

Have you tried TwinPalms...they also have the Residences with private pools. OR the Lagoon rooms have access to the pool....it is a SLH (Small luxury Hotel of World) and looks fab...I am going in 10days!!! Cant wait

    Hi

We stayed at Ayara hill tops 2 weeks ago, it was fantastic.

Although the resort was running at a fairly high capacity we never saw anyone. The private pool villas looked very nice. Unfortunately our budget did not stretch that far, we had a villa with the outdoor spa on the deck, this was still FANTASTIC. The main resort pool is a good and there are no hassles finding space to relax, most times we had the pool to ourselves. Staff will serve drinks to the pool when ever you want.

There is a good day spa, well equipt gym and the villas are well appointed. The staff are extremely attentive and polite. They are also very efficent.

I would stay at this resort again in a flash. If you want any more info just p.m me.

Hope this helps with the decisions.

If you don%26#39;t need to be directly on the beach, Alpina Phuket Nalina Resort looks very good - http://www.phuket.com/phuketnalina/index.htm

    4 week honeymoon

    Hello

We would love some advice on our honeymoon. We are looking to go to Thailand for four weeks 23rd December until 20th Jan.

We have never been to this part of the world before and would like some ideas as to what to do and where to stay. We basically want to have a look around for a week then a week on a beach then travel for a week and a week on a beach again.

We are not sure if it is worth also looking at visiting Vietnam or Malaysia for part of our trip.

So any oponions ideas or experiences would really be appreciated as we want this to be a really special trip.

    Thanks!

Bangkok: Temples, Palaces, shopping, night life

Chiangmai, Chiangrai, Lampang, etc.: Northern Thai culture and trekking

Small islands down south (Koh Ngai, Koh Mook, Koh Bulon, Koh Maithon, Koh LaoLian - camping, etc.): beaches and relaxation

    Phuket: Beaches %26amp; activities

Daytrip to Ayutthaya (old capital city) and Floating market from Bangkok.

4 weeks in Thailand suggestions please

Have been th Thailand 3 times and know we will spend time in September in Bangkok and Hua Hin which we love. Have been to Phuket/Patong but not our scene. Have spent 2 weeks in Chiang Mai and surrounds (a week too long). We are active though not sporty 50-somethigs and like food especially seafood, walking, shopping, culture but not especially temples. We have driven in Thailand and are happy to do that. Where to go that is culturally and historically meaningful with good food, good budget spas and needs a few days to take it all in - we need 3 to 4 of these locations accessible from Bangkok and/or Hua Hin. Any ideas appreciated.

4 weeks in Thailand suggestions please

Have you checked out the Temples in Phetchaburi city? There is a famous temple complex on top of the mountain (big hill) just as you go into Phetchaburi from the North and a famous cave temple east. You can also tour the King 5 mansion in Phetchaburi which is very famous and many movies made there. Additionally there are many older less famous temples in Phetchaburi. Also you should check out the Monday night market, its right beside the mountain temple as you come into Phetchaburi from Bangkok on Phetkasem road. If you are based in Hua Hin, I recommend a couple day trips to Phetchaburi if you haven%26#39;t already done that.

I lived in Phetchaburi for almost 4 years and have a house there with my Thai wife. The city is full of not-so-famous temples and interesting history.

    Good luck and have fun!

4 weeks in Thailand suggestions please

Sawadeekrup, greetings from Chiangrai, north Thailand. Now that you have done most of the things, have you ever consider about spending a few days living in a Thai house to experience the local%26#39;s lifestyle, customs, home cooked food. At the same time visiting the many attractions affordably.

    Here is some advice -

To reduce your trip costs, is to stay longer at a place to explore areas around your location closely. You will learn where the bargains can be found and where the cheap entertainment is. Besides, you will have the opportunity to submerge yourself more deeply in the local culture, a local may reveal an interesting spot you never would have considered when planning your itinerary back home or able to get a good judgment of what it is like to live in a place.

It won%26#39;t be cheap, if you constantly travel, never staying at a place long enough. Get in and out of the bus and train, spend long and tiring day doing touristy tours, then sleep in a cheap hotel only to get on another bus or train the next morning. Wherever you are, bus and train fares, and car rentals are expensive. No doubt, you will cover lots of places, but do you know the difference between seeing places and experiencing places?

Hope you will agree with me.

Thank you both for your suggestions. We%26#39;ll certsinly consider Petchuburi as we have only driven through there, and a home stay somewhere (?).

Sawadeekrup Zenophile, the suggested home stay with a Thai family is in Chiangrai province, north Thailand.

  • Turtle release -Songkran Day.

Anyone know anything about getting to see the turtles released. All I know is that it may have something to do with the Marriot hotel.

    Thanks

    Em

    Turtle release -Songkran Day.

There are numerous turtle releases in the area this time of year. Last Friday was a major event on Bang Tao Beach in front of the Sheraton. A couple weeks ago was a major festival in Thai Muang - just up the road on the mainland - a weeklong turtle festival March 6-15.

    You might try http://www.jwmarriottphuket.com/

They have a link to their turtle foundation. Difficult to access from here due to slow Internet as it is lots of flash stuff that takes too long to load on our slow lines.

    Turtle release -Songkran Day.

Yes, the Mai Khao MAarine Turtle Foundation does turtle releases on or just after Songkran (around 12th/13th April each year), and the Marriott sponsors, funds and supports the foundation, and the Marriott GM gets personally involved. They also look after the beach and get involved in other local and worthwhile projects.

For more information about the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation, you can visit their website www.maikhaoturtlefoundation.com or contact Michelle their Coordinator, via telephone 081-893 6001

    Power Points- recharging purposes

I was just wondering what the go is with power point at the hotels.I%26#39;ll need to recharge the batteries on the cameras.

I was told the plug in Aust. are different. What should i do??

Please help I love taking pictures...

    Power Points- recharging purposes

Hi, You can buy an adapter at any Dick Smith store for about $10 AU, they are also available at the duty free shop at the airport. Alternatively you can borrow one from housekeeping at your hotel. A tip I got from the forum was to take a small powerboard so you can charge all your items, phone, camera at once.

    Sue

    Power Points- recharging purposes

    Hi shereeski,

Buy yourself an adaptor, you can buy in Phuket or buy before you leave, Bag shops (Strandbags etc) sell them, Dick Smiths, Myers, el cheapo shops etc, they are about $10 here.

There is a photo of the adaptor we use on the link below. If you have more than one thing to charge eg, phones, etc take a small Aussie power board with you as well, then you only need the one adaptor.

    cathyandgarystravelpages.com/what_to_pack.htm

    Cathy

    Snap Sue haha

Got to be quick hey Cathy, it was probably your site I got the powerboard tip from hahaha.

See your going back again soon, we are really starting to miss the place, longest we have been away from Phuket. With a bit of luck next year is the go, but christmas would be nice.......... Sue

I would borrow one from the hotel til I could get out and buy an extra one for 30 baht ($1) in Phuket or get a cheap universal board (about $3 or $4) there. Much better than paying $10.

I have bought them at 711 stores or small supermarkets.

Hi, if there is a kathmandu store near you, they are having a sale at the moment %26amp; the adaptors are half price. I paid $5 for the one i got. Hope that helps :)

    Hi

All of the aussie power boards we have seen have the 3 pin plug and the adapter we have only accepts a 2 pin plug.

    Whats the go?

    Mitch

    Mitch,

The third pin in Aust is the earth wire. In Phuket they do not have the earth wire. Therefore if your appliance is not double insulated ie. has a plug with a third pin then if there is no third pin in the power point and there is a short circuit in the unit, stray electricity can not go down the earth wire path which means that it may go through you instead.

I am no sparky so I hope one who reads this, may clarify better.

    Cheers

    Niko

    Hi

What I want to do is take a power board from home to recharge my camera, laptop etc. I need an adapter with 2 pins to go into the wall and it needs 3 holes the other side to plug in my power board. Is this possible?

    Mitch

Our phone chargers and camera chargers only have the 2 pin plugs, we have never had any dramas using a 2 pin plug in a 3 point on the powerboard, but mostly just use the adaptor for the mobile. We only charge things while we are in the room, we disconnect everything b4 we go out again. Sue

Which hotel? Village resort & Spa or Impiana Phuket Cabana?

Looking for CLEAN, Thai styled boutique hotel with pleanty of beach and a nice pool. Spa services a plus also. We are 29 and 31 years old...still want go out but also have some peace and quiet. Thanks in advance for you advice!

Which hotel? Village resort %26amp; Spa or Impiana Phuket Cabana?

Hi from Aussie. My husband and I found the Impiana when we were already in Phuket staying at another hotel....we moved to the Impiana and are going back next week. We loved it. Can%26#39;t comment on the Village Resort %26amp; Spa. The Impiana is in the best location - you can get seclusion and within 5 minutes you%26#39;re in the hustle and bustle of Patong itself. Check the website out - you will see what you get. The rooms were spacious and clean all with balconies where you could relax and enjoy a drink before going out to eat. Has a spa and a restaurant..staff were lovely. The pool wasn%26#39;t huge but still good. Heaps of Europeans stay there - we found them to be a little arrogant and they did tend to put their towels on the chairs even if they weren%26#39;t using. Lovely beachside restaurants very close where the tables are on the sand. Can%26#39;t wait to go back - hope you enjoy....let me know if you need any other info. Cheers.

Which hotel? Village resort %26amp; Spa or Impiana Phuket Cabana?

I%26#39;ve also stayed at the Impiana Cabana and found it to be in the best position on Patong Beach.

I%26#39;d go back there anyday. Service was fantastic. We relaxed by the pool looking over the sea everyday and ventured out at night.

    Good luck!

    too many hotels in bangkok

    Hi Rodrigo,

it is also a difficult things to answer. First, it depends to what you are looking for. Center of action can be anywhere around Khao San, Sukhumvit, China town...

Most of the backpackers are staying in Banglamphu near Khao San Rd.

Budget traveller guesthouse, check www.lamphuhouse.com or I (personllally) also like Tuptim (with shared bathroom only)... it really depends on how much you would like to give per night. Because what you think it is a budget traveller can be mid range in Thailand.

Really it will be easier when you can give more info.

    too many hotels in bangkok

What is budget? Most think below 1000 Baht per night. In Bangkok stay near a BTS station. Something like Samran place for 850 a night for one person and is in the middle of things with BTS access to many other areas.

    Hi;

Majestic grande is nice and close to Sukhumvit road.

However, I like the Majestic suites much better with a 1/2 price and even better location close to Nana

BTS station . I was in the M.S 2x in year 2007 and

I shall be back this hotel in May 2008 for holiday/vacation . It is a home for Me in Bangkok.
