Holiday Inn - do they overbook?

What with the recent post about Merlin Beach Resort overbooking I%26#39;m now worried that this can happen anywhere. We are staying at Holiday Inn in June and I was just wondering if anyone knows if overbooking has occurred at Holiday Inn before?

I know the manager there, Wolfgang, I see him occasionally at Rotary meetings. If I get a chance I will ask him what the policy is. He is a real nice guy.

Overbooking does occur at the Holiday Inn. When we stayed there numerous people (ourselves included) were offerred ';incentives'; to go and stay in some resort in Kao Lak.

We declined the offer and stood our ground. Although several people did make the journey north.

hmm I%26#39;ve been reading the Merlin Beach Resort as well. As the husbands a Hotel GM,I meantioned this to him yesterday. He states it%26#39;s common practice to overbook your hotel and every hotel does it, assuming they will have some ';wash'; from in particular tour groups but also FIT (free independant travel reservations).

He recommends these things

always try to get there after 2pm checkin, if your checking in at say 10pm, chances are yor will get ';bumped'; if they have to find rooms!

';the squeekiest wheel gets the oil';, the louder you are the more you%26#39;ll get your own way, if your quiet you%26#39;ll get nothing

Above all if you get the letter with the incentives or the incentives meantioned on check in to go somewhere else, stand your ground and be firm...they can%26#39;t make you go anywhere...they will simply move on to the next guest and try the same tactiks with them.

Sounds abit over the top, but this kind of carry on is common in the industry...and alot of people take the bait to move...even here in Tasmania

This is all very interesting to find out. I know all airlines overbook but I never has any idea hotels did it too. Thanks everyone for the info!

Yeh, if that happens to us we will definitely stand our ground. It%26#39;s funny though, just the other day I was thinking I should have included a few days in Kao Lak as I%26#39;ve never been there before. Next time for sure.

Seeing as your husband%26#39;s a GM of a hotel they definitely won%26#39;t be able to get away with that one with you guys. We must have been extremely lucky with our previous visits because we%26#39;ve never had a problem before so I%26#39;ll think positively and say we won%26#39;t in June (fingers X).

We are staying at the Holiday Inn in June and I hope it goes smoothly. We are really looking forward to it. It is disapointing if you spend time researching to find the hotel you want if you have a problem at book-in.

We are booked to stay in the Holiday Inn in 2 interconnecting superior rooms and after all of the posts about over-booking at other hotels, including the Merlin Beach, I contacted the Holiday Inn directly and have now received confirmation in writing of our reservation.

She was very prompt in her response to us and sent us an absolutely lovely email confirming our booking and the fact that we requested interconnecting rooms.

I now feel confident that we will have a room on arrival!

Perhaps you should also contact her if you are feeling a little uneasy.

Forgot to ask what dates you are going to be at the Holiday Inn? We will be there from 19th June - 29th June and we have booked into the Friday Night BBQ on the 20th.

Thanks for your advise had just sent a e-mail directly to the hotel as your advised. We are going at Easter and will arrive late in the evening so all in all not a good combination, so hopefully we will a hotel confirmed clasped in our had.
