Other side of the river.. help please.

Last time I was in Bangkok I stayed at the Penninsula. But we never did anything on that that side of the river. We were always taking the boat across.

With that being said..this time we are trying to find a good hotel on the other side of the river. Centrally located to Pat Pong night market, Grand Palace, Etc...etc...

I dont want to stay miles away from the main tourist attractions and have tried to map hotels on google and yahoo... but am not having any luck.

Any hotel suggestions?

Also, I was thinking the Sofitel or The Landmark Bangkok.. does anyone know where these are located?

Thank You!

Other side of the river.. help please.

The Landmark is in Sukhumvit, the Sofitel in Silom. The Patpong Night market is also in Silom, but the best way to get to the Grand Palace is by Chao Phrya Express boat from the pier (Tha Sathorn) under Saphan Taksin skytrain station. Get off the boat at Tha Chang.

Other side of the river.. help please.

Thanks..but Unfortunately I do not know the areas very well.

Any suggestions on what areas to stay? My only point of referance is the Penninsula and I do not want to stay on that side of the river again.

Thank you.

Look, the ';other side of the river'; is ALL of central Bangkok in which there are dozens of first class hotels, hundreds of 4-star ones, and maybe thousands of lesser hostelries. Please start off by reading a guidebook or online guide so you have at least SOME idea. The Peninsula is in Thonburi. Here%26#39;s a good summary of Bangkok districts which I found in approximately 0.19 seconds by googling ';Bangkok districts';: thailandforvisitors.com/central/鈥?/a>

Here%26#39;s wikitravel%26#39;s compact guide to Bangkok: http://wikitravel.org/en/Bangkok

Here%26#39;s a half-decent map (The Peninsula is in B4): thaiwaysmagazine.com/bangkok_map/bangkok_map鈥?/a>

PS The Peninsula isn%26#39;t really that far from everything. True it is in Thonburi, but if you cross the river you can be at your Patpong market (if you MUST go there) in 15 minutes on the Skytrain. Take a boat upriver and in 20 minutes you%26#39;re at the Grand Palace (Tha Chang pier).

The Landmark is on Lower Sukhumvit, which tends to be a tourist zoo, and is right in the middle of a naughty nightlife district, although convenient for the Skytrain, and many services and shops oriented to tourists.

The Sofitel is on Silom, a business street by day and a street food and street cruising nucleus by night.

If you stay only in 5-star hotels, maybe you%26#39;d like the Intercontinental, at Chitlom right in the middle of the downtown shopping and mall district and on the new Skywalk as well as the Skytrain. Or the Siam City, a few Skytrain stops from the hustle and bustle or... I could go on and on.

Thanks for the info Bill2p.. next time you don%26#39;t have to be so rude about it.

:)

Oouch . .!

The Hyatt and 4 seasons are very well located.you can actually use the skywalk to get to Saim paragon.

the night market is a few kilometers away ,may be a ten minute cab ride.

the skytrains is next door to both these properties and super convenient.

The landmark is very pleasant ,however not 5 star.

if you want to be near the river try lebua, fantastic spacious apartmnets though not walking distance to main sites/shops a couple of stops on the skytrain.

OP, I don%26#39;t think it%26#39;s at all discourteous to suggest you do a little bit of research yourself before asking us to spend the time giving you free advice. It%26#39;s well known that on web forums, the more specific and well-informed the question is, the better the answers.

And I don%26#39;t think many would have taken the time and trouble to give you 3 helpful links AND address your question, as vague as it was.

Still not an excuse to be rude.

Trip advisor is how MOST of us learn about where we want to stay.. sorry if my knowledge of BKK is not to your standards. I%26#39;d rather take no reply than a rude one.

Thanks everyone else for your help.

I agree! Adding comments like ';(if you MUST go there)'; is completely rude. If that is where the poster wants to go, then why do you have to be rude about it?

Hasn%26#39;t your mom taught you - If you can%26#39;t say anything nice, don%26#39;t say anything at all!?!?!???

I have stayed at the Pen as well as other hotels including the Sofitel. I think the Sofitel Silom has a really great location and is still a very good value. It has nice large rooms, comfortable beds and very good service. The club lounge is also quite nice. It is one of the best deals in town. It is just far enough down Silom to be quiet, away from the night market, but only a 10 minute walk (and only a few blocks from a sky train stop). I would put the place at a really nice 4 or 4 1/2 star, but the Pen is certainly a 5 star in a class above. Other options closer to Sala Dang would be the Dusit Thani which is right there, or Lebua which is further down Silom toward the river. There are some places on Sathorn, which is a pretty long block walk or short cab ride (the Met, Sukkothai and Banyan Tree). From what you said I would go for the Sofitel Silom (unless you MUST have a full 5 star place and want to pay a bit more). You can sign up at accor.com to get a sofitel privilege card for free and that gives you free upgrades to the club floor!
