Backpacking south Thailand

We are two girls who plan to backpack Thailand for aprox 15 days before we move on to Malaysia and so on. This will be in August. We plan to start in Bangkok, and go by train or bus through Thailand and over to Malaysia.

I know August is rain season in Thailand, any place to avoid at that time?

And any place/sight we really shouldn%26#39;t miss?

It looks like we can get the train to most of the destinations, am I right? Or does anyone have better suggestions for travel? Are there areas that can be less safe for two young girls travelling?

How do you cross the border to Malaysia(where is this best to do?)

This is about a year old, but a glimpse of what%26#39;s been happening on and off in the south for years now:

... and this is the Australia%26#39;s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade%26#39;s travel advisory for Thailand (current as of 3 April 2008):

Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani provinces are not safe for travel oveland and you should avoid them. Songhla also has problems, including Hat Yai. There are frequent bombings and shootings.
